ART’S BIRTHDAY is an annual event first proposed in 1963 by French artist Robert Filliou.
He suggested that 1,000,000 years ago, there was no art. But one day, on the 17th of January to be precise, Art was born. According to Filliou, it happened when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water.

The picture of Robert Filliou with a paper hat is very well known. We created a website to celebrate ART’S BIRTHDAY and the act of folding paper hats.

You can download a PDF, print it and fold it into a hat. Then redesign, prepare, modify, decorate as you like ...
If you send us a nice photograph we would be honoured to include your hat in our online collection.

To celebrate 10 years of ART'S BIRTHDAY in Antwerp, the best hat will win a unique pure golden hat hand folded by the Belgian master goldsmith Jean Marie Hoegaerts.

A jury will select the winning hat on the 18 january 2015 and the golden miniature will be sent soon after the announcement on this blog.
